Az MME tagjai 30 területi, és több szakmai munkacsoport és szakosztály keretében tevékenykednek országszerte. Minden megyében működik legalább egy helyi csoportunk amelyek lehetővé teszik, hogy az ország egész területén képviseljük mind a szervezetet, mind a természetvédelem és a környezeti nevelés ügyét. Lakcíme alapján minden új egyesületi tag – hacsak nincs ettől eltérő kérése – a területileg illetékes helyi csoportunk tagjává válik. A belépés után a helyi csoport is felveszi a kapcsolatot az új taggal, és rendszeres elektronikus levelekkel, hírlevelekkel tájékoztatja a csoport eseményeiről, kirándulásairól, természetvédelmi akcióiról, melyekbe a tagok így be tudnak kapcsolódni.
