We are excited to announce that SGH has been honoured with the GovInsider Festival of Innovation Moonshot Award for our innovative implementations of Real-Time Location System (RTLS). One impactful example would be the RTLS asset tracking project deployed in 2024 across various departments which reduced the workload of nurses while enhancing patients' access of healthcare equipment. This is just one of the many initiatives we've adopted to enhance safety, efficiency, and patient care. This recognition reflects the hard work and dedication of our hospital as we strive to redefine healthcare innovation and create a safer, more supportive environment for both staff and patients. Together, we’re setting new standards in healthcare excellence! Meet Ms Winnie Chong Huijun, Senior Speech Therapist, our incoming Head of Department, Speech Therapy, from 1 April 2025. In her clinical practice, Winnie has a strong interest in respiratory and critical care services and is passionate about working with the geriatric population. Under her leadership, she has significantly enhanced the role of speech therapists in the management of advanced swallowing and communication disorders for tracheostomised and ventilated patients, and evolved geriatric patient care to emphasise both dysphagia management and quality of life as essential aspects of patient care. A leading voice in advancing the Allied Health profession, Winnie is instrumental in pursuing suctioning privileges for speech therapists in SGH, and has fostered strong interdisciplinary collaborations with key allied health departments, particularly Physiotherapy and Respiratory Therapy. Beyond her clinical contributions, she championed flexible work arrangements in the department, which was well-received by her colleagues in fostering better work-life harmony. As she steps into her new role, Winnie continues to lead efforts in enhancing speech therapy services for our patients. Stay tuned to learn more about her work and the impact of speech therapy at SGH.

Ever worried about hair loss? Also known as alopecia, the most common type of hair loss is called androgenetic alopecia, or you may know it as male or female pattern baldness. In men, the hair loss typically happens in an 'M' pattern with a receeding hairline, while women often have hair thinning at the vertex. But other than our genetics, hair problems can also arise from stress, injury or illness, and may even signal other underlying health problems. Associate Professor Chan Yew Weng has been instrumental in advancing Anaesthesiology in Singapore and beyond. Trained in anaesthesia for highly specialised procedures such as liver transplant, cardiac surgery, major vascular surgery and neurosurgery, as well as intensive care, A/Prof Chan has a diverse skill set. He once described his job as being the pilot in the operating theatre, navigating the patient and keeping them safe with every heartbeat. A/Prof Chan’s passion and visionary leadership have inspired generations of doctors to pursue anaesthesiology and encouraged colleagues to take on leadership roles in the healthcare system. A dedicated educator, he elevated postgraduate education for clinicians by starting fellowship programmes for young anaesthetists and surgeons when he was Director of SGH Postgraduate Medical Institute. He is also a passionate teacher and examiner for medical students and residents. His life-long dream was for Singapore to host the World Congress of Anaesthesiologists – which he called the Olympics of the practice, which prompted him to take on leadership roles in the Singapore, regional and world bodies in Anaesthesiology. His dream was fulfilled in 2024, which brought together practitioners from more than 140 countries. SingHealth #NewlyConferred #EmeritusConsultant #Healthcare #DefiningTomorrowsMedicine

At SGH, it’s always #PeopleFirst. We believe a supportive workplace starts with looking out for one another. Our Peer Support Lead, Pei Yi, shares how we’re making mental well-being a priority—training over 6,000 colleagues in Psychological First Aid (PFA) and growing our Peer Supporter (PFA+) network by 40%. With strong leadership support, we’re building a culture where no one has to face challenges alone. Because at SGH, we’ve got your back. #EmployerOfChoice #wegotyourback #SGHcares #SGHPeerSupport
“When you are down and out because you feel you are responsible for an outcome that could have been better, you really want a person to relate to.” – Our CEO’s words at our recent Peer Support Retreat captured the heart of our mission. “We work in a highly complex and stressful environment where patients come to us in their lowest points. Our staff work really hard, and that is a recipe where things can sometimes go wrong. That is why peer support is so important.” – CMB’s message reinforced what our senior management has always emphasized: caring for our people is paramount. Reflecting on an incredible year as SGH’s Peer Support Lead, I’m filled with immense pride in how far we’ve come in building a more supportive workplace culture. The unwavering support from our CEO and senior leaders has made peer support a cornerstone of our organisational identity. Since embarking on this journey last July, our vision to create a workplace where every colleague feels heard and supported is becoming a reality. Over 6,000 colleagues have been trained in Psychological First Aid (PFA), equipping them with the skills to support one another in tough times. Our 268 Peer Supporters (PFA+) have grown by 40% in the past year, a testament to SGH’s commitment to mental wellness. With strong backing from our Division Chairs and Heads of Department, we are setting ambitious goals—reaching 80% of our staff with PFA training to make peer support an integral part of our organisational DNA. This isn’t just about numbers; it’s about transforming how we stand by one another through life’s challenges, both big and small. A heartfelt thank you to Ghee Chee PHUA and Gary Ong for their strategic guidance in shaping our peer support initiatives, and to David Jeremiah Chee from OWB and the Peer Support Committee for their unwavering dedication to this cause. At SGH, we’ve got your back! #wegotyourback #PeopleFirst #SGHPeerSupport #SGHCares #SGHKindnessAtWork Singapore General Hospital

9 people in Singapore suffered serious skin reactions after taking medicines containing modafinil or armodafinil. Both drugs are unregistered in Singapore, though they can be obtained in some countries as prescription medicines for specific medical conditions such as narcolepsy. The patients suffered from Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), a life-threatening skin condition, and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), a more severe form of SJS. The conditions cause blistering rashes and severe peeling of the skin and mucous membranes. These medicines should be taken only when prescribed by a doctor and with proper medical supervision.
