The unexpected way fashion insiders are wearing jumpers this season - and you may remember it from decades past
If we told you knitted jumpers were trending this winter, you would hardly be surprised. It's pretty much a guarantee that the category will take centre stage on the autumn/winter runways each year - and be our most worn item when it's cold.
This season's shows were no exception. From pom pom-embellished designs at Aknvas to the XXL rollnecks at Alexander McQueen, our favourite knitwear styles for AW24 embraced a playful approach.
However, this winter, it's not what the jumper looks like, but how it's worn that guarantees approval from fashion insiders. And what is the key to acing the trend? It's all about nonchalantly tying your jumper around your neck - just like a scarf!
Don't believe us? Just take a look at the runways, where everyone from 16Arlington to Brioni showcased the trend. Or, take to Instagram, where all our favourite fashion content creators can be spotted with their cardigans and jumpers worn over their outerwear on their shoulders. Influencers Amy Shaw and Belle L make it look effortless, or look to Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner for chic, model-off-duty street style inspiration.

John Lewis is even selling a jumper this season with the scarf-like extra sleeves built in - yours for £49.
As with most trends, this isn't the first time the look has been in fashion. In fact, a knotted jumper around the shoulders was also big news back in the Noughties when the preppy aesthetic was trending.
This time round, however, the trick is keeping it more laid-back and unfussy. Baggy silhouettes and chunky knits are the way to go. Extra style points if you wear the same colour jumper around your neck as is on your body for a cool monochrome look.
Thankfully this trend is surprisingly easy (and affordable) to try out for yourself. As long as you have a knitted jumper somewhere in your wardrobe, you can give it a go. Why not dip your toes into the trend by layering a red or royal blue knit over a trench coat? It instantly pulls an outfit together and adds a welcome pop of colour.

Our advice? Stick to thin knits for easier tying. And, if you opt for a cardigan, make sure to do the buttons up first to keep it looking tidy!
