Demi reflected on her latest performance in the body-horror fantasy The Substance, which earned her a 13-minute standing ovation at Cannes in May.

She stars as the fading Hollywood beauty Elisabeth Sparkle, who takes a pioneering drug to create a younger version of herself - with horrifying results.

Demi explained her process for portraying a character that feels a 'sense of despair' over the loss of her youth.

Demi said: 'The rug is pulled out from under her after she loses her job.

'We know this woman lives alone, isn’t married and didn’t have children, so it’s clear right away that she had nothing else but fame. She poured everything into that.'

The outlet noted that the film's director Coralie Fargeat said that the most intense day for Demi was a scene in which her character is getting ready for a date and 'keeps running back to the mirror to wipe off her make-up and then apply even more, fearing she looks too old.'

Demi said: 'It was very difficult. It’s one of the most heart-wrenching moments in the film. I think we can all relate to trying to make ourselves look better, and just making it worse and worse.

'Coralie likes to do a lot of takes, and my face was just raw. I got to a point where I couldn’t do it anymore.'

As for whether the film changed her feelings on aging, Demi said her view is not 'hugely different before and after.

'It gave me a greater appreciation for myself as I am. One of the biggest themes of my career is challenging preconceived ideas and limitations.

'I’m at a point where I’m writing my own story, as opposed to my story being dictated to me based on my age.'

Additionally, she recalled having 'more challenges' in her career, in her 40s.

Demi said: 'At that time, no one quite knew what to do with me. I wasn’t 30, but I wasn’t 40 in a way that people could comfortably identify me as a mother, etc. There was no place for me.'

Demi says there's also more 'interesting' roles, now, for women who are 40 to 50.'

Demi added: 'I feel like things have changed. The Substance is harsh in how it tackles the entertainment industry, its judgments and its beauty standards.

'It’s also throwing this idea that a woman’s desirability ends with her fertility in Hollywood’s face.'

She also applauded how The Substance approached aging in Hollywood in such a brutal way.

She said: 'It was one of the most interesting ways to explore the subject.

'While it’s framed around women, it was relatable to all of us as humans - the feeling of being discarded, overlooked. A lack of appreciation for who we are.'
