Arsenal could reap the rewards of shelving their interest in Newcastle forward Alexander Isak and signing Viktor Gyokeres instead. Both players have been linked with potential moves to the Emirates Stadium in advance of next season. Mikel Arteta is thought to be keen on recruiting a new striker to boost his side's chances of winning the Premier League title.

The north Londoners are known to be admirers of Isak, who has proven himself as one of the division's best forwards in recent years. However, it would take a huge amount of money to prise him away from Newcastle, where he remains tied down until 2028. It has been reported that any club hoping to buy Isak would need to shell out around £150million.

Gyokeres, meanwhile, has been scoring with frightening regularity at Sporting this season. He has bagged 42 goals in as many games for the Portuguese heavyweights, with his incredible form attracting interest from elsewhere.

The likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Barcelona have all been credited with a desire to land the Swede. Arsenal are now believed to be stepping up their own pursuit, with The Athletic reporting that new sporting director Andrea Berta is a 'firm admirer'.

They already have plenty of reasons to pursue a move for Gyokeres, given his formidable scoring record and potential to shine in the Premier League. Now, it has emerged that Arsenal would also save a huge amount of money by targeting him instead of Isak.

Gyokeres has a release clause of £83m written into his contract, but it has been claimed that he could move for significantly less. Sporting expect him to leave in the summer and will consider offers in the region of £58m, according to Ben Jacobs.

It suggests Arsenal could get a more prolific striker than Isak at a fraction of the price, making it a no-brainer. They will need to do it quickly, though, with rival clubs almost certain to join the race under those conditions.

Arsenal would also be able to use the money saved to increase investment in other areas of the pitch. A new midfielder is another priority target for the Gunners, with the futures of Jorginho and Thomas Partey far from certain.

It was reported in January that a deal worth £51m had been agreed to land Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. The move is yet to be made official, though, suggesting there may be some loose ends which need to be tied up.
