“The arbitrary influences affecting artists' vocabularies are many, and not necessarily all beneficial. The limiting trends of the day, the biting criticism, or the instruction insistent upon getting us to conform against our temperament can affect the work in profound ways, sometimes stalling us for decades.”

“Artistic "style" that does not evolve as a result of a natural process is the embodiment of "fake it till you make it," referring to the way something APPEARS, not the way that it IS. It's a veneer, a hollow afterthought technique hung on the artwork to dress it up... I prefer to think in terms of the artist's VOICE. Voice is deeper, manifested from the very core of your being. You earn it through research, experimentation, and discovery. It is a synthesis of the experiences, intellectual concepts, and aesthetic interests you possess, executed in your distinctive way, in the formal, emotional and intellectual language of your chosen medium. When successful, the realization of your voice follows the gestalt principle. The combination of your ideas and the work's physical embodiment is greater than the sum of its parts and distinguishes your outcome from everyone else's.”

“Lifecast by Stewart Stafford
Lifecast
Be your play's lead actor,
Beware of its shooting star,
In drama's immortal mania,
Your reputation carries far.
Fish your dawn-gold phrases,
From out the impostor's throat,
Your tongue streaming candor,
Not stumbling forth by rote.
Let no Salieri hand,
Override your author's claim,
Even if remuneration's elusive,
You may still relish the acclaim.

“Pushing against,
Against the wall of material reality
Of creative limits.
Pushing against
The wall on which the canvas hangs,
Up against the wall of our senses. Our minds,
A spell cast in a brush stroke.”

“Have you prepared a candlelit table for dinner in a forest where twilight reigns? Some may call this dazzling table, elegantly lit, a fantasy or a madness, but you call it the magnificent touch of artistic mind to life!”

“When I ache, when I'm tired or just lonely living in the town on my own, I know I have to keep on going. I walk into my theater and see my stage which still calls out to me and pleads with me, "Use me. Create for me." It's there ready to offer itself for more creatively [sic]. It is up to me to use it again. My theater says to me, "Take me. Do something with me. I'm ready for the challenge. Give me something to live for; something to look forward to.”
