Yeshiva's baseball team snaps 99-game skid with 9-5 victory over equally hapless Lehman
TEANECK, N.J. (AP) — The losing is over for Yeshiva University’s baseball team. The Modern Orthodox Jewish school snapped a 99-game skid Tuesday with a 9-5 victory over Lehman College in the opener of the New York City neighbors’ nonconference doubleheader played at Fairleigh Dickinson University. No such luck for Lehman, however. The loss was the Lightning’s 43rd in a row. The schools had a combined streak of futility that stretched to 141 consecutive games before playing each other. Caltech in Pasadena, California, dropped 228 straight games from 2003-2013.
Reds place second baseman Matt McLain on injured list as precaution with left hamstring injury
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Cincinnati Reds second baseman Matt McLain was placed on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday with a strained left hamstring that the team expects will heal quickly by giving him some days to rest. Manager Terry Francona said McLain had been bothered by the leg in recent days and it made sense to get him off his legs and be cautious in the hope that he can come back in a week. “There’s just so much baseball left to play that it just didn’t seem like it made a lot of sense to try to push through this right now,” Francona said before the Reds played the middle game of their three-game series series against the San Francisco Giants. McLain was batting .214 with three home runs and five RBIs over eight games, including seven starts at second base. Without him, the Reds’ depth is tested given Spencer Steer is currently unavailable to play the field because of a tender throwing shoulder — and he was the designated hitter batting seventh Tuesday.
Alonso and Lindor lead Mets past Marlins 10-5 for 6th straight win
NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Alonso drove in four runs, Francisco Lindor hit a leadoff homer and the New York Mets beat the Miami Marlins 10-5 on Tuesday for their sixth consecutive victory. Clay Holmes (1-1) struck out a career-high 10 in 5 1/3 innings for his first win with the Mets and second as a major league starter. Brandon Nimmo broke a fifth-inning tie with a two-run double, and Starling Marte blooped a two-run single. Juan Soto had two singles and scored twice, including on Alonso’s wind-aided, pop-fly double that eluded Kyle Stowers in shallow right field. The temperature at first pitch, moved up three hours Monday to 4:10 p.m. because of a harsh weather forecast, was 43 degrees at blustery Citi Field. Derek Hill hit a two-run homer for the Marlins and made an incredible diving catch on the left-center warning track to save three runs. Liam Hicks had three RBIs.
