How did Pam Bondi, reasonably, expect Justice Department lawyer Erez Reuveni to defend the indefensible? Kilmar Abrego Garcia was living in the country legally, had a work permit and a previous court order prohibiting his removal, of which the government was well-aware, yet they deported him to El Salvador and sentenced him to indefinite confinement at CECOT. Once he is out of the country and is not considered protected by America (being illegal and all), there is no responsibility or reason to bring him back. He was still available for deportation anyway. They originally just didn’t want him going to El Salvador because he was afraid another gang would kill him for being with MS-13. Contrary to some comments here, this story is not about the questioning of authority. This lawyer went into court as a DOJ representative. When queried by the judge, he sided with the judge against the DOJ position. He did not do his job, and that is obvious. DOJ was kind to put him on paid leave. Maybe the young lawyer thought he could get away with a rhetorical flourish with the judge. I hope it was worth his career.
