The National Library has a vast repository of newspapers from Israel and around the world. Whether it's a newspaper published in Israel (in any language) or by a Jewish community abroad, you'll likely be able to find it in our collection.
The newspaper may be:
1. Scanned and digitized and available for online remote viewing via our Historical Jewish Press website.
2. Scanned and digitized but viewable online only from within the NLI building (due to copyright and terms of use restrictions).
3. Found in its original paper editions, which can be viewed at the NLI.
4. Scanned and available for viewing on microfilm reels at the NLI.
💡Important to know: The availability of a particular newspaper's editions may vary according to the year of publication. For example, Hebrew editions of Haaretz from 1918 to 1966 can be viewed online remotely, while editions from 1996 to 2003 and from 2014 onwards can only be viewed online at the NLI building. Editions from 2004 to 2013 are only available on microfilm.
We recommend beginning by searching through newspapers that have been scanned and are available for remote viewing on our Historical Jewish Press website, using the tab marked "Titles".
Use this link ("Titles" tab) to go to the website, and type in the title of the desired newspaper in the search bar.
Found what you were looking for?
Is the year or month you're looking for greyed-out or simply not present?
Editions from these dates have not been scanned and therefore you'll need to search for a printed edition or microfilm version using the NLI catalog.
Go to our catalog to see the availability of the paper in the relevant period (newspaper details usually include a reference to the newspaper's entry in the NLI catalog, see the explanation below - "How to search and view a newspaper with the NLI catalog").
Does the year or month you're looking for appear with a "locked" symbol?
These editions can only be viewed from within the NLI building in Jerusalem, likely because of copyright or terms of use restrictions. You can visit us during reading hall opening hours and view them using NLI computers or with your own computer (please note that while the newspaper can be viewed online when you are in the building, it will not be possible to download the newspapers to your own device).
Haven't found what you're looking for on the Historical Jewish Press website? Continue on to the NLI catalog.
All of the newspapers we preserve can be found in our catalog, including those that are not digitally available.
Simple search
In the search bar, type in the title of the newspaper and in the taskbar below click on "Newspapers and Periodicals".
If you've typed in a long or unique title, this first search may be enough to find the title you're looking for in the results. If your search has brought up too many results, we recommend using the Advanced Search option.
Advanced Search
In order to narrow down the results and improve your chances of finding the desired newspaper, do the following.
How to view a newspaper you've found
To find out what format the newspaper is available in, click on "Show location".
In the window that appears you will see a list of available editions, arranged by year (click on "Load more" and "All" to see all editions).
You will be able to see what formats each edition or volume is available in (printed form or microfilm) and where it can be found, according to the following:
Haven't managed to find the newspaper? Found it but you're not sure how it can be viewed?
Begin your search by looking through our Historical Jewish Press website, using the "Dates" tab.
Here you can select the year, month and day you're interested in. You can see which newspapers are available online for each date. Clicking on a newspaper title will take you the scanned edition.
Do the newspapers on the date you're looking for appear with a "locked" symbol?
These editions can only be viewed from within the NLI building in Jerusalem, likely because of copyright or terms of use restrictions. You can visit us during reading hall opening hours and view them using NLI computers or with your own computer (please note that while the newspaper can be viewed online when you are in the building, it will not be possible to download the newspapers to your own device). You can also order a scan of these editions.
No newspapers appearing for the desired date?
You can likely find a newspaper from this date in our collections, but not one that can be viewed online remotely. If you know for a fact that a specific newspaper was published on this date, you can order a scan of it.
If you'd like to visit us and view certain newspapers – contact us and we'll guide you through the process.
Go to the Historical Jewish Press website and type in the name or relevant search terms. The search will be conducted on the full texts of our digital collection of scanned newspapers.
Important to know: As a default, the search will be only conducted on newspapers that are accessible to you in the location where you currently are (in the NLI building or outside of it).
If you are searching from home and you’d like to also include newspapers that are only digitally accessible from within the NLI building, uncheck the option "Search only accessible titles".
In the NLI building we have a digitized database of Yedioth Aharonoth newspapers, beginning with the very first edition and up to this very day. The full texts of this database can be searched using keywords. The database can be accessed via two computers that are located in our reading halls (floor -1). You are welcome to visit during reading hall opening hours and search through this database.
💡Tip: If you are searching for news coverage of a particular event, it is safe to assume that you can find coverage of the event in other daily newspapers published on the same date.
The Beit Ariela Public Library website contains information on press articles, primarily from 1993 onwards. The collection includes the following Hebrew newspapers: Yedioth Aharonoth, Haaretz, Maariv, Yated Ne'eman, Hatzofeh and Makor Rishon. You can search for articles by author or topic, and the collection may indicate when the article was published and in what newspaper.
After locating the details of the article, you can find it in our collections by following the instructions in the relevant newspaper guides found here.
You may need to come to the Library and search our physical newspaper collections. See the explanation above on "Searching with the NLI catalog".
