Part of the beauty of Smith Rock State Park is its raptor presence.
Smith Rock State Park is home to a variety of raptor species, from Bald and Golden Eagles to Prairie and Peregrine Falcons, each starting their courtship and nesting at various times. We are usually fortunate to have a couple of new additions to each of the species most years thanks to climbers, slackliners, and hikers observing signage from park management staff.
We’ll keep you updated here and on our Facebook and Instagram pages as annual climbing and slackline area nesting closures are updated.
NESTING AREA RESTRICTIONS
The Monument Area will be closed to climbing for Golden Eagle nesting protection beginning January 10th, 2025.
The Smith Rock Group and First Kiss areas are closed to climbing for Falcon nesting protection beginning March 6, 2025. See images with maps for specific areas.
The Canyon Trail near the Bald Eagle nest is restricted to travel in groups of 4 or less, and noise needs to be kept to a minimum.
Smith Rock’s ban on drone use is now in effect park-wide for the remainder of the raptor nesting season.
