Mizuho Yuuki's best friend Miko has fallen in love with Tohru. Miko is fairly innocent and comes from a strict background so Mizuho tries not to get in the way of their relationship despite her growing awareness of Tohru who is currently boarding with her family, and accepts going on a date with the wealthy Haruhiko. There is also outside interference from Ai, a younger student in their school, who also likes Tohru.

At best, even if it did come 'first', the OVAs just aren't as well written as the 1999 series with an alternative plot and the same characters. Even as an adapted romance, it's no better than average. But it does help to complete a set, I suppose. I recommend the 1999 series, and if you liked that, then you may be interested in checking this one out, but don't watch the OVAs first. It doesn't actually matter... But the overall ambiance between the 1999 series and the '2' series are more similar to each other, whereas the ambiance here just feels... off. For fans.

Verdict: brief joyride for the 90s-hgame aficionado.


There are several titles out there that willfully try to walk the borderline between romance and hentai. And while a select few of them actually manage to do so sucessfully - with being neither bland nor explicit - others painfully perish in the no man's land inbetween.
Depending on your background, this one is likely to be one of those casualties.



Animation:
A 1998 title, so the designs look a bit dated. One can see it in the faces, but most of all in the body proportions, which are entirely 'cute 90s style'. (a tad shortgrown, but with considerable... attributes) The animation fluidity is so-so, and the fact that the video is interleaved doesn't really make it better.

Sound:
The choice of seiyuu is appropriate, but extreme. The main girl has an acceptable actor, but the rest of the seiyuu range from very submissive to very genki, with not much inbetween. They do complement the behavior of their charas, yes - but that just means that those are a problem, too.
Especially the 'shy' girl has a voice that constantly makes her sound like an introvert grade schooler...

Story:
Friction losses between game and anime are a given. The problem is, if the game's story is nothing special to begin with, the result tends to be even worse. Accordingly, the first two Eps pass without a single innnovative scene. Instead, they merrily plunge from one cliche into the next. Also, there is no 'extra' layer in this one. No magic, no aliens, no girlrobots, no larger-than-life drama... or whatever else authors tend to throw in to spice things up.

Characters:
I've truly seen my share of not-very-realistic hgame-based girl characters, some of which I really enjoyed. But this one actually left a stale aftertaste even on my tongue. The reason for this is of course that this OVA was made from your typical shallow 90s-datingsim... in any case, the girls blatantly act like hgame-personae - and in a way worse than I ever saw before. In an anime, at least. Not a spark of realism...



Finishing line:
There's basically only one reason to watch this: to see an archetypical 90s h-dating game brought to life. This it does quite well. The rest... well, there is no rest, that's all it does.
The only hentai scene - at the end of ep4 - is halfway nice, yet unnecessary. Not to mention the way there is long and, in terms of todays plot development and humor, quite bleak. Fanservice is abundant, but rather in the 'broader' sense of the word - namely not so much pantyshots/swimsuits (both present, though) but rather generally fanservicish unrealistic character behavior.

Anyway, if you know the field and want to reminiscence, it will provide you with some amusing deja-vus and a few nice smirks. If you don't, stay away.
