Fans are all saying the same thing as HBO Max's The Sex Lives of College Girls gets canceled

  • It was reported on Tuesday that the comedy has been axed after three seasons
  • Bosses are said to be hoping that the show is picked up by another streamer
  • But fans admitted that they were not surprised by the news

The Sex Lives of College Girls fans aren't surprised that the show has been cancelled on HBO Max after three seasons – and nor are they hopeful that it will find a new home for series four.

It was announced on Tuesday that the comedy, co-created and executive produced by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble and starring Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur and Alyah Chanelle Scott, has been axed by the streaming giant.

According to Deadline, however, producing studio Warner Bros. Television has been looking for ways to keep the show going at Netflix.

The third season of The Sex Lives of College Girls debuted in November 2024 and ran for 10 episodes but failed to impress, earning an audience rating of just 69 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

By comparison, season two was rated 88 percent by audiences and season one, 88 percent.

Adding insult to injury, lead star Renee Rapp – who played openly gay student Leighton Murray - quit the comedy in July 2023, with her final scenes airing in season three.

Taking to the show's Reddit sub, many fans said they weren't shocked that the show wasn't continuing on Max, and attributed its demise to a 'nosedive in quality' in recent episodes.

Commenting on a thread about the cancelation news, one said: 'After seeing last season I'm not surprised to be honest.'

'RIP! Think it had a good run, [but] had a feeling it was getting the chop after this past season,' added another. 'Hopefully we see Pauline, Amrit, and Alyah in more things!'

Echoing a similar sentiment, a third agreed: 'Yeah saw it coming from a mile away.'

'It's super sad but I'm not surprised after this season,' another posted.

'I liked the season but it wasn't as strong as the previous ones, and people were pretty vocal about it as well…. Hopefully someone picks it up and gives it one more season to properly send it off.'

'This is a bummer but not unexpected,' said a fifth.

'I feel like season three was such a weird pacing for the episodes, almost like they had filmed for a longer episode and then had to cut and slice and dub in and make it the 30 min length instead.'

A sixth simply wrote: 'Was bound to happen. The quality took a nosedive in season three.'

The finale of Sex Lives of College Girls aired on January 23.

In the last episode, the athletic board demanded that Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) return to the team, prompting Willow (Renika Williams) and other teammates to speak up against Coach Hale's abuse of power.

Meanwhile, Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) got arrested after she joined a protest against a hateful speaker coming to Essex, and Bela (Amrit Kaur) realized she is bisexual after she kissed Haley.
