Munto... What a weird OAV. It came from a shoujo manga, but the style and action sequences in this anime makes it seem like a shounen anime. The first Munto OAV was hampered by shoddy voice acting, incomplete plot, and not enough development of its main characters.
Animation: Munto's animation remained top notch from its first OAV. Lurid colors combined with a fantasy like setting makes for a very satisfied watch. Kyoto Animation has flexed its muscles again, showing that they are the premier animation company. Characters move, blink, and run so fluidly that it compares with some anime movies. The backgrounds are also done very well, with consistent character designs and creative use of light as a metaphor.
Sound: Beautiful orchestral pieces coupled up with a soothing and calm ending song makes for a very decent sound score. The music complements the awesome animation wonderfully well, with the right music at the right times.
Story: Munto's storyline is still not complete even after 2 60 minute OAV's. We learn about Yumemi's powers to see the two worlds, we learn about Munto's past, but the story doesn't end. There's no conclusion yet. Some side stories about Yumemi's friends were complete, but the overall mood about the two worlds colliding doesn't have a "ending" feel to it. I really hope they make a Munto III OAV.
Character: Yumemi made for a mysterious main character. Reluctant and hesitant at her path in life, she still cannot accept the mission set forth for her in Munto. Her character designs reminded me a lot of Misuzu from AIR. Ichiko and Suzume were Yumemi's obligatory friends, and Munto and Kazuya were the guy characters in this fantasy story. The characters were interesting enough, but the reason they get a 6 is because of the fact that the voice acting was mediocre at best. Munto sounds stiffy, and Yumemi and Ichiko sounds very fake. The voice actors used in this OAV were all rookies, as none of them had worked on any anime before. Only Suzune and Yumemi's brother's voice sounded alright. Every one else's voices grated my nerves.
Value and Enjoyment: Even with such shoddy voice acting, Munto is still a very solid and decent OAV. The music and animation will blow you away, as with its solid fantasy-like story. Let's hope that Kyoto Animation makes Munto III and trains the voice actors better. If combined, the 3? OAVs will make a nice anime movie.
