ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Despite a season-best performance from junior guard
Jeriyah Johnson, Eastern Women's Basketball dropped a 70-47 decision to McDaniel in its second home game of the young season on Saturday. The Lancaster native scored 28 of Eastern's 45 points, two shy of her career-high, but the Eagles again struggled to put the ball in the hoop on a consistent basis.
Johnson scored her 28 points on 11-of-22 shooting from the floor and three-of-six from beyond the arc.
Maiah Madison put together a strong performance off the bench with a career-high eight points and four rebounds to go along with a pair of steals.
Trinity Upton added five points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals. The Eagles, however, shot just 19-of-62 (30.6 percent) for the contest.
The Green Terror (5-1) built a lead they would not relinquish on the heels of a strong first quarter. McDaniel shot a robust nine-of-13 (69.2 percent), using their size in the paint to their advantage. The Green Terror opened the game on a 9-2 run and ended the quarter on a 6-0 surge to take a 19-8 lead into the second quarter.
Johnson carried much of the offensive load in the first half, scoring 13 of Eastern's 17 first half points. The Eagles drew to within eight points on a layup from senior transfer
Mojisola Shokeye, but were held off the scoreboard for the final 3:57 of the first half as McDaniel took a 30-17 lead into the halftime break.
Eastern played their best third quarter of the season with 17 points on seven made goals. After falling behind by 26, the Eagles used a 10-0 run to trim their deficit back to 16. Upton scored all five of her points in the run, and Madison also scored on a hook shot and a pair of free throws.
Madison's second field goal of the game put the Eagles within 15 points early in the fourth quarter, but they would not get any closer. The Green Terror were able to push their advantage back to 25 before eventually securing the 23-point victory. Elaina Beckett led McDaniel with 14 points, Raegan Lenz scored 13, and Lauren Cavoli finished with 12 points on four triples, all of which came in the second half. Teya McConnaha led all players with 13 rebounds to go along with her eight points.
Eastern (0-6) will be back in action this coming Tuesday, Nov. 26, against Ursinus in Collegeville. Tip-off is set for 6:00 pm.
