The brave new world of the future! Earth has gone through its third energy revolution, and now all power is based on a new invention called 'the Shizuma Drive,' a complete recyclable and pollution free energy system created ten years ago by a group of five scientists. These drives power everything. There is no more danger of nuclear radiation, or waste of rare resources such as petroleum.
Even though it sounds like an ideal society, there are still problems. There are two major powers who are locked in a fierce struggle. The first is the Big Fire Organization, which is a very powerful evil organization that threatens to conquer the world with the help of their numerous robots.
The only people capable of putting a stop to their plan is the International Police Organization. They consist of a team of agents, all having their own special powers. They also have the most powerful robot in the world, Giant Robo. Giant Robo is controlled by Kusama Daisaku.

Like Akira, the animation technique will never get old, it is plain awesome, anime style at its best. The plot goes the same way but with less success. Too much inspiring "ganbatte ne" dialogs and sacrificial deaths, the villains are overwhelming powerful and annoying, they talk too much and refuse to die. The final climax is about 50/50 no true definite victory or defeat, it doesn't truly ends what makes up a very unsatisfying conclusion. Watch the battles, feast your eyes with the astounding battle scenes and fast forward the annoying speeches.

There was a great line in Excel Saga that anime was about explosions, but for me anime is about movement. No other anime epitomizes that principle of inventive movement than Giant Robo. From the first scene running on the transforming train/robot to the final battle to end all battles, Giant Robo just looks amazing--with movement that can only be depicted in anime. The story may be built out of old concepts, but the final product is purely unique. These are the best giant robots, the best mad scientists, and the best anime-style super-heroes.
There's a great ecological theme that isn't didactic. And the music! The music is breathtaking--classic symphony used expertly. Finally, the most important thing, the story has realistic consequences. That's uncommon in any storyline, much less anime. This show should be considered a classic.

This is a classic -- not because it's representative of any particular style, but precisely because it is so unusual. Everything meshes well - the retro-style animation done to modern standards, the operatic music, the tokusatsu plot.
And speaking of plot, I've taken to using GR as a reference unit of plot twistedness. Comparatively little media ever reaches 1 GR, and precious few exceed it.
