Overall
The main problem with most anime movies lies in the nature of anime itself. Anime is remarkably imaginative; it is designed to be mind expanding and will always be more creative than standard motion picture. Unfortunately, because of the uniqueness of anime, it does not fit well into motion picture length. No matter how cool an anime movie is, no matter how innovative, you still find yourself pressing the indiglo button on your watch.
...Except for this anime. From the beginning to the end, I was absolutely enthralled. The suspense builds and builds and builds, until not only is Blackjack (the main character) preforming brain surgery against a figurative time bomb, he's preforming it under a literal time bomb as well. I cannot enumerate just how much this anime held my attention. I wasn't just on the edge of my seat, I was falling off of it.
Animation
Unlike the OVA, the animation in Blackjack - The Movie truly shines. Though still frames are used, they are incredibly well stylized and are used to print a clear image in your mind rather than to just cut costs. The still frames are ironically perhaps one of the best parts of Blackjack's animation.
Other high points in the animation include a cgi-animated pool, well done fireworks and Blackjack's billowing trenchcoat.
Sound
I generally almost never say this, but: watch the dub! It's amazing, all of the voice actors are incredibly convincing.
Music is seldom used. If it were, it would probably take away from the ridiculously good voice acting. I enjoyed the opening and closing themes, they're very laid back and reflect the style of Blackjack.
Story
Totally gripping.
Character
Blackjack once again proves himself as a classic character. Pinocho (spelling? I did watch the dub, after all) is much more cute and loveable than in the OVA. Other supporting characters are also well drawn.
